Theword"ecology",isderivedfromtheGreekwordoicos(house/residence).ItfirstappearedinGerman,namelydieOkologie,inEnglishistheecology.Ecologismdoesnotemergesuddenly,butiscloselyassociatedwithromanticmovementinthe18th-century.In1858theAmericanwriterThoreauIllustratedinWaldentheconceptthatthehumanandthenatureshouldbeinharmony.Hewasagainstthehustleandbustleofcityfromecologicalbalanceperspective,andpraisedthethenaturalworldofwoodsandstreams.
