F.Scott.Fitzgerald(1896-1940),oneofthegreatestnovelistsinthe20thcentury,wasbestknownasthespokesmanoftheJazzAge,atermhecoined.HewasevenacclaimedasaremarkablenovelistandoneofthebestwritersinthiserabyHemingway.Inhiswholelifetime,mostnovelshewrotemainlydealtwiththedisillusionmentoftheAmericanDreaminthe1920s,aperiodbetweentheendoftheWorldWarOneandthebeginningoftheGreatDepression.SohewascalledthechronicleroftheJazzAgetoo.

TheGreatGatsbywaswidelyconsideredtobeF.Scott.Fitzgeraldsgreatestnovel,whichwasatruedescriptionoftheJazzAgeandwasalsolistedasoneofUnitedStatessgreatestnovels.Itarousedwidespreadconcerninsocietyandreceiveditscriticalpraisesinceitwaspublishedin1925inNewYork.ItlargelyandvividlyportrayedthespiritualaffairsofAmericanyouthsaftertheWorldWarOne.Ayoungman,Gatsbyfromthelowerclassstroveforhisgreatideal-tomarryawealthywoman,Daisy,andtoenterintotheupperclass.However,atlasthewasabandonedbyherandfailedtofulfillhisgreatdream.

ThisthesiswillrestudythedisillusionmentoftheAmericandreaminTheGreatGatsbythroughanewtheory,TheGreatGatsbyCurveproposedbyMilesCorak,Canadianeconomist.ItwillgiveadeeperandmoreprofounddiscussionaboutTheGreatGatsbyandexploredifferentreasonsfortheruinoftheAmericandream.

F.Scott.FitzgeraldwasoneoftheAmericanwritersofLostGeneration,andalsowasnamedasthecrownwriterinJazzAge.Ashisimportantmasterpiece,TheGreatGatsbyhasarousedkeenpublicresponsesinceitsverypublicationin1925.

Ontheonehand,initsfirstpublicationof1925,thesalesofTheGreatGatsbywasverydisappointing,whichwasitsunpopularityatfirst.TheworkfundamentallyandharshlycriticizedtheAmericansociety,notonitsetiquettebutthebasiclifeattitude.FitzgeraldscriticismwasharsherthanwhatHenryJamesthoughtonAmericanpoverty(203,204).Thefamousliterarycritic,H.L.MenckenstillheldaconservativecommentonTheGreatGatsbythatthisnovelonlytoldsosimpleastorythatitcouldnotcausepeoplesresonate(200).Evensomecriticsonlysaidthatthisfictionputupwithadelicatesubjectorfrankly,thefictionwasunimpressiveandunworthyofre-readingsothatitcouldnotexertfar-reachingeffect(78).Maybethesereviewscouldbeunderstandableatthattime.

Ontheotherhand,FitzgeraldhimselfgrewincreasinglyconfidentofitsqualityandtoldhisfriendMaxwellPerkinsthatTheGreatGatsbywasmoreorlessseriouslyaboutthebestAmericannoveleverwritten(185).Inaddition,accordingtoMatthewJ.Bruccoli,aleadingFitzgeraldscholar,therewereseventeenneweditionsorreprintsofTheGreatGatsbybetween1941and1949(170).AndT.S.Eliot,afamouspoet,excellentdramatistandimportantliterarycritic,oncetoldFitzgeraldthathehadreadTheGreatGatsbyforthreetimesandconsidereditthefirststepforwardAmericanfictionhadtakensinceHenryJames(149,78).
