Previous studies onThe Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club, written by Amy Tan,has been the subject of much criticism since its publication in 1989. It wasfirstly translated into Chinese by Chen Naishan in 1990. Since then, a lot ofChinese scholars have done tremendous research from various perspectives. Thereare more than 1000 academic articles published on cnki.net between 2000 and2014 and two perspectives should deserve our attention: Conflicts andReconciliation.

Some scholars show great interest in the analysis of conflicts betweenChinese mothers and Americanized daughters.

Gu Ping (2008) thought that the cultural conflicts between Confucianismand American spirit represented by the two generations of mothers and daughtersare revealed. For example, the conflicts betweenthe pecking order of family members in Chinese family and the equality idea inAmerican family, the conflicts between Chinese modesty and American frankness, the conflicts between family awareness in Confucianism and individualism inAmerican spirit and conflicts between the Chinese-American daughters and thenative American. She emphasized that the differences between the Confucianismand American spirit. Gao Heshun (2009) stated that there are four kinds ofconflicts between mothers and daughters, such as the conflicts between Chinese longsplendid cultural background and American cultural background with a few centuries, the conflicts between the pecking order of family members in Chinese family andthe equality idea in American family, the conflicts between sharing joy andsorrows with each other in Chinese and struggling on ones own in America andthe conflicts between Chinese modesty and American frankness. He thought themain reasons why the two different cultures reconcile include multi-understanding, mothersaccepting American culture gradually and Chinese rapid economic development. LiDan (2012) noted that through the conflicts and reconciliation among the fourpairs of mothers of Chinese origin and daughters who grew up in America, the novel reveals different views oneducation, family, and marriage between Chinaand America. She thought maternal love and effective communication reconcile the conflictswith time passing.

Some scholars mainly focus on the reasons of reconciliation of themother-daughter relation.

Chen Aiming and Zhang Ruihua (2001) noted that the novel not onlyreflects the collusion and blending of Sino-American cultures through the fourpairs of Chinese mothers and daughters who grew up in America, but alsoestablishes a prospect of the reconciliation between two different cultures. They also emphasized that the mutual understanding and blending are thesolutions to conflicts between Eastern and Western cultures. Luo Ri(2012) analyzed the conflicts of the four pairs of Chinese mothers and Americandaughters respectively. She considered that the way to avoid the conflicts isto know about two different cultures. The most thing in this novel is to ownright attitude towards culture. Carry on native culture and bring in newculture. Find balance in the cultural conflicts. It is basically wrong to stickto Chinese culture only or believe in new American value in the society of multi-culture.Dang Wei (2009) said the mother-daughter conflicts described in The Joy LuckClub demonstrate the differences and contradictions between Americanculture and Chinese culture. Different graphical conditions, historicaldevelopment process and social organizational pattern of the two nations arefundamental factors that cause the differences. She also thought thatmulti-respect and developing together will remove the conflicts gradually.

Critics lay the foundation for Amy Tan in American literature. However, many writers focused on the theme of the mother-daughter conflicts, while AmyTans novel is based on the conflicts of the first immigrants and theirchildren, which made her novel appeal to a quite large number of readers. Thisnovel not only talks about the conflicts and blending between Chinese mothersand American daughters, but also involves the conflicts and reconciliationbetween Chinese culture and American culture.
